Aadhunik – December 2015

An action-packed weekend that saw the launch of Asian Arts Agency’s brand new event, Aadhunik (Hindi for ‘cutting edge’ or ‘modern’) in Bristol and London. Bringing over Basement Bhangra legend DJ Rekha all the way from New York City, alongside world-renowned The Dhol Foundation and BBC Radio’s Bobby Friction, it promised bags of energy and pumping rhythms.

Things kicked things on Friday 11th December in Bristol at the Trinity Centre, starting with a dance workshop courtesy of The Bollywoodettes from Wales. After an intense introduction to Bollywood and Bhangra dance moves, and some refuelling with Indian snacks, Bobby Friction hit the stage to get everyone in the spirit of things with some killer Bhangra mixes.

The mighty Dhol Foundation were next up with their massive stage presence and thumping drums, getting everyone jumping up and dancing along to their captivating rhythms. DJ Rekha topped off the night, with her classic hip-hop tunes and Bollywood remixes and fancy art visualisations that had people partying well past bedtime.

But there was little time to rest weary feet as it started all over again the next day at London’s Rich Mix in Bethnal Green! Saturday’s event began with an exclusive chat with DJ Rekha and London’s DJ Ritu, hosted by the South Asian Women’s Creative Collective (SAWCC) about everything from identity to early scenes to teaching other DJs how to spin.

London’s crowd at Rich Mix was enthusiastic and very loud, and we had a great time with you!
