Chahat Mahmood Ali Qawwal was born and raised into a qawwali singing family in Faisalabad, Pakistan. A student of Ustaad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. He has been described by the Financial Times as, “Chahat Ali is only 21 years old, yet performs like a master.”
Chahat Mahmood Ali Qawwal, son and father duo hail from Faisalabad, Pakistan and made their UK debut in July 2023 and have now performed at several high-profile events including South Bank Centre, London, to Big Johns Birmingham Mela, Eid in the Square in Trafalgar Square and Caird Hall, Dundee, Sufi Festival.
Sarfaraz Hussain, the tabla player with Chahat Mahmood Ali Qawwal, is lead singer at the shrine of Bulleh Shah, one of the most popular Punjabi poets and saints, in Kasur, Pakistan. He is the third generation in his family to perform there.
Qawwali is the most popular form of Sufi music and became internationally famous thanks to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (1948-97), the larger-than-life singer who performed at the Womad festival and collaborations with Peter Gabriel’s Real-World label.
