Rizwan-Muazzam performing Qawwali in March 2017

A special festival weekend of performances, as artists push the boundaries of musical expectations.

We were delighted to programme Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwals into Le Guess Who this year, as part of Asian Arts Agency’s mission to take South Asian music to new audiences both in the UK and internationally.

With the motto of Listening is the Way Forward, Le Guess Who? festival is widely considered to be one of the most forward-thinking festivals around. The event exists to promote sounds that are often overlooked, and to platform fresh perspectives on what is possible in music as artists from all over the world push the boundaries of expectations and offer an insight into the unprecedented diversity of human creativity.

“Proving that even in times of political divide, music and art can bring us together into a more hopeful future”  (Line Of Best Fit)

Qawwali music pioneers Rizwaan-Muazzam Qawwals make their highly anticipated festival debut this year.

The group is led by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s nephews, Rizwan and Muazzam, who have been performing together as Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwals since the 1990s. The internationally-acclaimed group will showcase their new album, At the Feet of the Beloved, (released in March on Real World Records) as well as playing the UK premiere of performances from Chain of Light, the lost Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan album which was first released last year; discovered 34 years after it was recorded.

Harmonium drones, a steady pulse of handclaps rising and falling in intensity, tablas poised for firecracker explosions and voices raining down devotions both divine and secular.” (⭐⭐⭐⭐ Financial Times)
